Chinese New Year Celebration

The 2019 Chinese New Year Celebration by KYCAA will be held on Saturday Feb. 2, 2019 at Lexington Opera House(401 West Short Street Lexington, KY 40507)

  • 4:30 pm – 6:45 pm

    Holiday market with festival foods, crafts, traditional costumes, calligraphy, mini Chinese lectures, cultural displays and family activities.

  • 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

    Performance featuring festival songs, dances, Chinese music ensemble including Erhu, Hulusi, Yangqin, flute, etc, Kungfu, Chinese cheongsam show, dragon dance and a special presentation of martial arts, singing and Chinese opera.

  • Limited seating available.

Victimhood Nationalism: A Transnational History

Join the UK History Department for a guest lecture by Jie-Hyun Lim, Professor of Transnational History and founding director of the Critical Global Studies Institute at Sogang University in Seoul. Most recently he published five volumes of the Palgrave series of mass dictatorship in the 20th century’ as the series editor. He is now executive board member of the CISH and the president elect of the Network of Global and World History Organizations for 2015–2020. He has held visiting appointments at Cracow Pedagogical University, Warsaw University, Harvard-Yenching Institute, Nichibunken, EHESS, Paris II University and Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. His present research topic is transnational memory of ‘victimhood nationalism’ covering Post –WWII Korea, Japan, Poland, Israel and Germany.

Learn how to cook some delicious traditional Lebanese dishes including: flatbread with herbs (Zaa'tar Man'ouche), chopped parsley salad (Tabouli), spiced cauliflower (Zahra Meqila), and chick pea dip (Hummus).

Sri Lankan Family Style

Be inspired to create a Sri Lankan family-style cuisine with owner and chef, Samantha Fore of Tuk Tuk Sri Lankan Bites. Students will make dishes and present them to their fellow classmates, discuss various spices, and learn the history of Sri Lankan style food. Students will create and enjoy Chicken Curry, tempered green beans, potato curry, and scented rice. Come hungry and leave full!

Daisy Alliance Nuclear Non Proliferation Simulation

Description:Interested in diplomacy, foreign affairs or nuclear proliferation? Travel to Atlanta, GA February 22-24th to participate in a multi-university simulation about nuclear proliferation within East Asia. Represent a country/delegation like North Korea, Russia, USA, Japan and make treaties, negotiate with other countries, and form alliances.

This is a weekend trip with a stipend provided. Travel is provided by the university. This is a great opportunity to gain more hands on experience battling crises and issues that happen in today's political atmosphere!

Issam Rafea Oud Performance

Please join UK College of Arts & Sciences Passport to the World Program - Year of Migration, in welcoming musician Issam Rafea to the University of Kentucky. Rafea will be performing on January 31st in the Niles Gallery of the Lucille Little Fine Arts Library.

In addition to the concert, there will be a lunchtime meet and greet with Rafea from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm in Lafferty Hall Room 104. Those interested in attending should RSVP to Catherine Brereton at catherine.brereton@uky.edu
