Populism, Trump, and American Democracy in Comparative Perspective

Join the UK College of Arts & Sciences and the Department of Social Theory for a guest lecture on, "Populism, Trump, and American Democracy in Comparative Perspective." This lecture is part of the Spring 2019 Lecture Series by The Committee on Social Theory.

Kenneth M. Roberts is the Richard J. Schwartz Professor of Government at Cornell University. His research and teaching interests focus on party systems, populism, social movements, and the politics of inequality in Latin America. He is the author of Changing Course in Latin America: Party Systems in the Neoliberal Era (Cambridge University Press) and Deepening Democracy? The Modern Left and Social Movements in Chile and Peru (Standford University Press). He is also the co-editor of The Resurgence of the Latin American Left (Johns Hopkins University Press), The Diffusion of Social Movements (Cambridge University Press), and Beyond Neoliberalism? Patterns, Responses, and New Directions in Latin America and the Caribbean (Palgrave-MacMillan). His current research explores the political impact of financial crises in Latin America and Southern Europe from a cross-regional comparative persepective.

The Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce is working with the School of Journalism to host a crisis simulation. Students who take part will work together to engineer a diplomatic solution to a hypothetical international crisis. For the current simulation, the general area of interest will be Kurdistan.

Intimate Publics: Remigration, Transculturality, and Culinary Coexistence in Chinese Latinx Restaurants

Professor Lok Siu is a cultural anthropologist and faculty of Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley. Her areas of expertise include Asian diasporas in the Americas, transnational migration, belonging and cultural citizenship, performance, and food. Her award winning books include Memories of a Future Home: Diasporic Citizenship of Chinese in Panama (Stanford U Press 2005) and Asian Diasporas: New Formations, New Conceptions (Stanford U Press 2007). She lectures at universities and museums throughout the US and Europe, and she has appeared in CNN's United Shades of America with Kamau Bell and on WNYC's Brian Leher show. She is currently working on her book manuscript, "Worlding Asian Latinx: Living Archives of Cultural Mixing."
